"Holding a Grudge" quest help needed

So during this quest in Farlorn's Hope, you are told to find and defeat 2 trolls. After finding them in the north close to the Godstone, I looked at their health and such, and decided that they were too strong for me to face. That's why I decided to save it for later. On my return to Farlon's Hope (when trying to safe the Refugees) I tried again. Still too strong, I used the cheap tactic of teleporting in and out using the Godstone to slowly chip away at their health. After killing them both the quest did not update and I just assumed it was another bug so I went to the woodcutter/well-man who gave the quest. He seemed to be gone but there was corpse nearby, leading me to the conclusion that the royal army that arrived killed him.

This meant that the killing of the trolls had to be done on the first time you are on the map. Because they are too strong to take head-on (+that didn't update the quest thing last time) I assumed there had to be a specific way to do this. The corpse near them looks like it's poisoned, plus it says that "there are no external wounds" which would indicate that they were indeed poisoned (most likely). Another thing I found out was that one of the hidden achievements is called Arachnophobia (which I didn't achieve yet), so I thought "Maybe spiders would scare them somehow?". I checked how far I could lure them (not very far) and saw that they completely ignored the orcs on the right side. On the left side however, there were spiders, so I thought to myself "maybe lure them together?". After luring them together the trolls and spiders attacked eachother.

Unfortunately, the spiders never stood a chance and they were stunlocked to death.

My question therefore is, has anyone found a proper way to do this? Do I somehow need to repeat the same principle as in Spellforce 1: The Order of Dawn where you poison a Giant to weaken him?

If you don't want to spoil it, at least tell me whether I should look around more or it's a bugged quest or something.
